St Lucia

St Lucia

St Lucia is a small town located on the East coast of South Africa.
Surrounded by an UNESCO World Heritage Site, this town is at the heart of magnificent natural coastal forests, wild animals, majestic bird life, breathtaking beaches and hospitable people

The iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa’s first proclaimed UNESCO World Heritage Site surrounds this small town.

The 332,000 hectare Park contains three major lake systems, eight interlinking ecosystems, 700 year old fishing traditions, most of South Africaโ€™s remaining swamp forests, Africaโ€™s largest estuarine system, 526 bird species and 25,000 year-old coastal dunes โ€“ among the highest in the world.

The Park is a short distance away from the town and features wildlife such as Elephant, Hyena, Wild Dog, Giraffe, Warthog, Wild Bush Pig, Leopard, Genet, Porcupine, Buffalo, white and black Rhinoceros, Zebra and various antelope species.

Over the years St Lucia evolved into a small tourist town and now features over 60 guest houses, restaurants in the main road, gift shops and loads of activities.

What sets St Lucia apart from any other town in the world, is the hippos. Hippos in the water, hippos in the bush, hippos in the street, hippos everywhere.

The best and most magical way to experience hippos in St Lucia is on a hippo boat cruise. In St Lucia, there are boats on the lake that take you up and close to wildlife such as hippos and crocodiles.
